FORTMED 2024 – Tirana (ALB), 18-20 April 2024

FORTMED 2024 is the International Conference on Modern Age Fortifications of the Mediterranean coast.
Supported by the Polytechnic University of Tirana, the organization of this conference has involved the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, the Department of Architecture, and the Department of Restoration and Technology of Architecture. Among others, the call has raised the interest of researchers from Albania, Balkan countries, and Italy, who have been studying the eastern Adriatic coast-a topic that has not been thoroughly explored in previous editions.
The contributions are collected in these two volumes (XVI and XVII) and organized according to their content into thematic sections, representing different topics and ways of approaching the study of defensive heritage: Historical research, Research on Built Heritage, Characterization of geomaterials, Digital Heritage, Culture and Management, and Miscellany.

Programme: The teaching programme is divided into theoretical contributions and the analysis of case studies. The topics addressed by the lecturers involved concern the analysis and interpretation of archive drawings, reconstructive digital modelling, and the use of virtual and augmented reality for heritage communication. A number of international scholars will participate in the teaching, invited for specific contributions. The detailed teaching programme will be provided one week in advance of the start of the lectures.

EGA 2024 – La Coruña (ESP) / Porto (POR), 27-29 May 2024

The motif of the 20th EGA International Congress, “Graphic Horizons”, reflects the yearning of our speciality to try to see beyond the present moment. The horizon – by definition unreachable – acts as a symbol of the unwritten future, but also as a source of hope in the face of uncertainty. In order to broaden our horizons and go beyond the present, we welcome in this congress all the themes and experiences of our collective: that of architectural graphic expression. Gathering a wide range of ideas is of vital importance in order to be able to face the abrupt changes that the future brings, to resolve adverse situations in a less precipitous manner. Fortunately, the field of graphic expression is no stranger to understanding reality as a continuous process of successive changes. The future of our area of knowledge will depend on our ability to adapt.

The Series contains the proceedings volumes of the annual conferences of the UID Scientific Society – Unione Italiana per il Disegno and the results of international meetings, researches and symposia organized as part of the activities promoted or sponsored by the UID. The themes concern the Scientific Disciplinary Sector CEAR-10/A Disegno including also interdisciplinary research fields. The volumes of the proceedings are drawn up following an open call and with a strong international focus. The texts are in Italian or in the author’s mother tongue (English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish) with full translation into English. The International Scientific Committee includes the members of the Scientific Technical Committee of the UID and numerous other foreign teachers who are experts in the field of graphic representation.

FORTMED 2025 is the International Conference on Modern Age Fortifications of the Mediterranean coast.
The eighth edition is once again hosted in Italy and is organized by the Università degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Department of Architecture and Industrial Design (DADI).
In collaboration with various local, national, and international institutions, this eighth edition represents a renewed opportunity to further explore Mediterranean fortifications from a historical-cultural perspective while also reviving the debate on the strategic role of defensive architectures in relation to contemporary realities.
In this edition, particular attention has been dedicated to the evolution of defense techniques over the centuries and the role of fortifications in contemporary times.
Discussions have addressed the influence of new technologies for the documentation and conservation of heritage, as well as the use of digital tools for modeling and structural analysis. Additionally, the pros and cons of the impact of mass tourism on fortified sites, in contrast with sustainable tourism that enhances cultural awareness regarding restoration and management policies, have been examined.
